5 Ways To Keep Your Cat Cool This Summer

May 25 • 2 minute read

As temps rise in Texas, it’s important to keep your cat cool as can be. And did you know that grooming plays a crucial part in keeping your cat comfy? Not only can the heat make your companion uncomfortable, but the Texas humidity can cause increased matting and tangling of the fur. Read more about how to keep your cat cool this summer!

  1. keep the paws clean

During the summer, cats can pick up all kinds of debris on their paws, including dirt, grass, and even burrs when they spend time outside. Keep their paws clean and trimmed to avoid irritation or infection. You can use a damp cloth or pet-safe wipes to gently clean their paws after they've been outside.

  2. keep the fur trimmed

If your cat has long hair, consider getting it trimmed during the summer months to help keep them cool and reduce the risk of matting. A professional groomer can help with this, but if you chose to do it yourself, be sure to use sharp scissors and go slowly to avoid accidentally cutting your cat's skin.

  3. provide plenty of water

We know, this one seems pretty obvious but it’s very important. Just like people, cats need to stay hydrated during the hot Texas summers. Make sure your cat always has access to fresh, clean water, and consider adding ice cubes to their water dish to help keep it cool.

  4. bathe as needed

While cats are typically good at grooming themselves, a bath can be helpful during the summer to help cool them down and remove any excess oil or dirt from their fur. If your feline friend will tolerate a bath, use a cat-specific shampoo and be sure to rinse thoroughly to avoid leaving any residue on your cat's skin.

  5. brush regularly

Regular brushing is important year-round, but it's especially crucial during the hot summer months when your cat's fur is more likely to become matted and tangled. Brush your cat at least once a day in the summer, paying extra attention to areas like the belly, under the legs, and around the neck where mats are more likely to form.

Taking these steps you can help ensure that your cat stays comfortable and healthy during the hot and humid Texas summers. And don't forget, if you have any concerns about your cat's health or grooming needs, Rollin’ Vets is always here to help!
